Them vs. Us: A Litany

Where do I fit in?

A group of any size can be divided into these two parts for this litany. It is based on a poem by Simone Poortman.

Them Us
Where do I fit in?

Them: If I am one of “them”, they are “us

Us: If I am one of “us”, who are “they”?

Them: Being one of “us” is only half”

Us: I miss “them”`

Them: Only when I am one of “them” can I be part of the
Complete “us”

Us: I know both: “them” and “us”

Them: How do I dare to become one of “them”
To become one of “us”?

Us: How do I dare to become one of “them”
To become one of “us”?

ALL: We are both them and us.
Amen.

This poem was shared during the 2006 World Council of Churches gathering in Brazil. Simone Poortman is from the Netherlands and is part of the WCC Disabilities Caucus.
