New Format on United Church of Christ Website

June 12, 2007

When the United Church of Christ changed web systems recently, it also updated its format.

To link to the United Church of Christ Disabilities Ministries web site, www.uccdm/org, when visiting the denomination’s website, www.ucc.org, go to menu topic, Change the World.

To link to the United Church of Christ Mental Illnesses Ministries web site, www.min-ucc.org, when visiting the denomination’s website, www.ucc.org, go to menu topic, Change the World then to Health Ministries.

On the UCC DM web site, to link to the Mental Illness Network or to the UCC website, go to Related Websites on the UCC DM web site menu found at bottom left on all pages of the web site.

The initial deployment of the new UCC national website brought on criticism by those noting problems in access and accessibility.

The site is built with Micro-media FLASH which is not a native web program. This had the effect of rendering text readers useless and access by those on dial-up frustrating with a page load time of 3 minutes or more.

Subsequently, a text links page was created to amend the problem. But, problems remain.

My question is, considering I have a vision disability myself, was UCC Disabilities Ministries consulted at all on the development of the new website and requirements that the new website be as accessible as possible to all? And, if not, why not? Thank you. William
